12:56 am - Back in Japan
Well, everything's released now, so I don't think there's anything to announce here right now, I guess... except that there's an Maikaze interview I'm mediating right now. And well, few other stuff, but I guess that can be later.

12:08 am - Update on Touhou Anime Project
kay, I'm still in exile, but I thought I'll post a bit of update on how the Touhou Anime Project is going. The dubbing for the animation is complete, and it's pretty much set for release in this winter Comiket, unless Tokine dies in the middle of writing the backgrounds.

Anyway, the dubbing was just completed this week. So, the voices are in. I can't tell you who the voice actors are, but you won't be disappointed.

09:56 pm - Away for a while?

I'm in Shanghai right now, and will be until January next year. So, I'm away from work at Maikaze. If all goes well, it should be complete by winter.

Anyway, I can't login to LJ from Shanghai (without proxies) so this might be the last post for a long time. Maybe I'll start a new blog.

02:19 am - Touhou Anime Project Update
Okay, so, people are actually reading this once I put info on Touhou Anime Project. ;o

I actually started a blog in Japanese, so forgot about this one for a while.

Well, here's an update, it's not going to be released at Comiket this year. Sorry guys. We just really lack background artists... as the official site says. At this rate, even if the current BG artist draws 3 cuts a day, we won't make it.

Mm, we seem to have been cursed or something. (Hina probably lives next door to us or something?) I mean, all kinds of bad things are happening to us. The delay, the cancellation of the after event at Reitasai, now the Akiba Express (a bus line that goes from Comiket to Akihabara) has been cancelled this year due to rising oil prices. Why is that bad, you ask? We were going to have a Touhou Anime Project advertisement bus run... but, well, the bus isn't running so, that's cancelled as well.

Anyway, finals week, so, probably won't be updating soon?

12:38 am - Keio University 150th Anniversary Celebration Party @ Disney Sea
My university rented out Tokyo Disney Sea (Wikipedia entry here) for the evening today (well, technically yesterday), to hold a 150th anniversary celebration. I went with a bunch of friends, and it was pretty fun. I haven't been to Disney Sea since its opening 6 years ago. (I think?)

The park was open to public earlier in the day, but after 18:30 the park closes to regular guests, and only Keio-related persons remain.  It was less crowded than a typical, day, I think? but it's Disneyland afterall, there are waits in the line. I brought a NDS, and we played Mario Kart when we got stuck in a line. (The Journey to the Center of the Earth experienced a technical problem and stopped for 30 minutes or so when we were waiting in the line.) After the ceremony at 19:00, which we saw the largest chorus of "Wakakichi" in history, I left my friends and went with my family for a dinner at MiraCosta Hotel, which overlooks Disney Sea. (There were over 20,000 people gathered at the harbor at the ceremony. The song "Wakakichi" is... not exactly the school song, but it's a Keio theme song that everyone in Keio "should" be able to sing. It's normally sung at sporting events. My friends went to the Tower of Terror, which we were unable to get on during the day because of the 160+ minute wait time... and Fast Passes for the day were all gone by 14:30. I kind of wanted to go, since I've never been on the Tower of Terror in Japan, but, well, I wanted the dinner more.. haha.)

I think this is the first time I felt fortunate that I was a Keio student. heh.. It's probably the only university in Japan that'd come up with a lunatic idea as to rent out Disney to celebrate an anniversary. It's not like I didn't like Keio before, but I haven't been particularly fond of it until today. The university provided me a nice opportunity to get together with friends and family.

12:56 am - The Dreaded... "Data Unacceptable"
This morning I ran in the local 10km marathon. I made it to the end, alright. I can still run, it seems. Taking glucosamine pills now, since I heard they are good for joint aches... but Wikipedia says "conflicting results" on effectiveness. I hope this'll get rid of the knee pain that's been bothering me for years now. If it doesn't, oh well.

Anyway, the marathon was pretty big, but the main problems of the day occured in the afternoon. The Illustrator data I sent to the printing company few days ago was unaccepted, and the order delayed. So, seems like this won't make it. Blah. Well, I'll cancel this order tomorrow. Anyway, so I go looking for an alternative, and voila! There's a company that'll print & send flyers within the day if it's in the Tokyo Metropolis. So, I try ordering, and send in the data... but their server goes down at 10pm when the data is due. *cough* Well, I'll try again tomorrow morning... Geez, what's with these companies... I mean, yes, there was a problem with the data I sent in in the first place, but, they request for a sample JPEG image anyway, can't they just force correct and go ahead and print? I mean, I don't care so much if the color is slightly different or the printing comes out a bit too light or something, it's better than actually NOT having the flyers when they are due.

12:50 am - Wilhelmina, Wilhelmina, Wilhelmina

Got a Wilhelmina figurine~

View... )

Ever since I saw this on display at Akibaoo I've been wondering where it came from. Well, Akibaoo has a figurine section, but, it didn't look like the ones there... (I later found out these were sold on the shelf by the cash register at Akibaoo, and also, the fact that they were boxed made them harder to find.) Anyway, I was at Chiba today and was wandering around the Yodobashi Camera building, and the Yellow Submarine hobby shop had these boxes stacked... I thought immediately of getting them, but the problem is, these boxed figurines are a gamble. There are like 5 different figurines, and what you get is random. There are pre-opened boxes sold at the store, but, the price goes up (2,000 yen for Wilhelmina) and the only preopened Wilhelmina figurine had a bad paint job on the hair. I found out that the boxes weighed slightly differently when I lifed them, and I bought three of the heaviest ones (since Wilhelmina looked like she has more parts than the rest.) And well, you can probably tell that I got what I wanted, since I'm posting the picture. The other 2 are from a series I don't know, but they are made so that you can display them together... (this is part of an Ito Noizi figurine collection.) Mmm, this is the first Wilhelmina Carmel figurine I know of, though, odd, considering there are lots of Shana figurines out, and Wilhelmina is pretty popular... I think? Well, I'm pretty sure there'll be a 3,000~8,000 yen figurine made of her soon enough? (These are ~700 yen a box. Depends on where you buy it.)

01:04 am - Time, Time, Time... Sakuya-san, hand me your watch! D;
Well, ya, running out of time again. Only 2 weeks more. The flyers for Jiji is nearly done. Just need to fix mechanics/layout mistakes make it into a PDF. The introduction movie, I just started making... I need BGM that starts out slow and changes tempo after like 20 seconds. Preferably something classic, so I don't have to go barter with the record company. Mm... maybe I'll chop up Dvorak's New World Syphony or something? That's if I run out of time... Classic -> Trance song would be nice, but nothing from Rave-SLave matches my need. :x  It'd be nice if I could use Touhou BGM, but I'd probably get killed if I did that. Ugh... I'm starting to not like the jobs from Keizaishinjinkai.

12:21 am - Speakers

Got the new speakers... not the one I was planning to get, but it's an Onkyo set with digital input. These are what I got: GX-D90GX-100HD, which I was planning to get were sold out everywhere including online shops.

The olders speakers I've been using since back in Taiwan... (almost 10 years ago?) have "MLi 270T" written on them. It seems they aren't as bad as I thought them to be. But, when I turn the volume nob, it makes a crackling sound and when the volume is turned low, often one of the speakers quit playing.

11:59 pm

I wish my house (or well, technically my parent's house) were closer to inner city Tokyo. An hour from Tokyo on the train is a bit far. Or well, it probably seems far since I go across Tokyo to the other side, but.. :P

I was remote controlling the computer at home using VNC, but, when I installed a codec pack and tried to reboot, it froze... and the FTP I setup on the second computer froze as well... ;P so, I went home today to reboot the computer and check the mail (not email but real mail). There was a letter from the university in the mail, I thought it was the report card, but, when I looked closely, it was addressed to my father and it had the 150th anniversary logo, so I found out it was just another advertisement/donation mail. It seems the report card is going to be sent out on the 10th, and it's going to be uploaded to our web accounts on the same day.

Being in a house alone is pretty lonely (compared to a condo or hotel room, I mean). It wasn't that bad when I was working in my room with the heater on and the sun still up, but felt a bit creepy when it was getting dark and I was eating cup noodles alone in the cold living room. It felt too large. I really want an apartment of my own, but, then, if I rent an apartment, I'll probably face budget cuts on my allowance, which would hurt my animation career... lol. I guess I'll have to cope with the slight inconvenience for a while... I'm quite better off than the other college students who usually have part time jobs.

Anyway, speaking of money, my cheapo speaker that's been with me since I was in Taiwan is starting to crackle when I turn the sound down, so I'm thinking of upgrading the speaker on the desktop system. For a moment I thought I'll buy something cheap and wait till I have money, but... considering speakers technology doesn't make rapid progress like CPUs and also that most good speakers need aging, I thought maybe I shouldn't waste money on something cheap, and instead try to find something I can use for a decade or so? (Like I did with the old speakers, though they were really cheap. I think it was like NT$280... so, like US$12? lol...)

Anyway, but, if I get the ONKYO speakers, which are like $200, I won't be able to get a CPU upgrade, but, mmm... do I really need a quad core? ....mmm, well, I want a machine that could render fast, but, the bottleneck for video rendering is usually the hard drive speed. (I looked around a bit, and found out it's not always the case, but I don't do ultra-nested compositions in 3D or anything, so.) So, CPU upgrade probably won't do much except satisfy my desire for a fast CPU... lol. Normal solution would probably be to make a RAID0 system, but, the main computer already has a RAID5 array. So, well, I thought maybe I'll make it a x64 system and try out ramdisk... Well, most people probably don't understand a thing I just said, but, ramdisk is kind of like this:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=1PiYgBhAkAM

This is a bit different, but you get the idea... insanely fast.

Mmm... for the reference, specs on my computers now :3

Case: Antec P150 (includes 430 watt power supply from Antec)
Motherboard: GA-P35-DS3R (rev1.0)
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6750
Memory: Elixir Chip DDR2-800 1GB x2 (bulk) (Dual-Channel)
Graphics Card: GeForce 8600GT 256MB (bulk)
HDD: Hitachi 500GB SATA x3 (RAID5)
Optical Drive: Some cheap drive from BENQ with lightscribe

Well, from my previous mistake, I learned that the case is probably the most important part of the computer. :P  A good machine looks really cheap and unsatisfactory without a good case. And the Antec P150 looks beautiful for the price, plus it's really easy to take apart. It's rock solid... I can rest my foot on it and it won't budge. (The old case has a dent on top from my bad habit of laying my foot on it while I go on RO.) The only problem... is that it's insanely heavy. With everything assembled, the computer weighs over 12kg. I carried it to my aunt's house once, and I thought I'll break my back. Currently runs Windows Vista Home Premium x86... I want Ultimate... ugh, oh well, I just want the remote desktop feature, but, I guess I'll wait for a Vista compatible VNC... until then, it runs as an FTP server.

And that's not all, lol, I have a second machine ;3

Case: Shuttle SN25P
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+
Memory: DDR-400 512MB x2 (Dual-Channel)
Graphics Card: ASUS GeForce 7600GT
HDD: Western Digital 320GB, Seagate 250GB SATA
Optical Drive: I have no idea, it's some old DVD-R drive that can't burn DL disks.

This one is, really small and really quite, and it's not as fast as the other one, but I love it? it's so small... ;o  I broke my Socket939 motherboard a while back, and all the other parts were still working... so I went to look for a replacement board. And that day, T-Zone was doing a clearance on these things and I got the last of them for like $200. Whee? I mean, these things were over $400 one time, I think? It was good since I got to replace the horrid case I had and fit all the old parts in a nice compact package. (Got a CPU upgrade after a while, though. Before I had a AMD Athlon 64 3200+, but I hurried bought a Socket939 dual-core before they stop selling them, those were getting cheap as well anyway.)

Okay, well, that kind of sums up what I've been doing with my computers for these few years, lol. Except for the laptop. The laptop I just got a memory upgrade from 512MB to 1.5GB. It's okay for surfing web or playing 2D games, but 3D performance sucks and rendering videos on this thing is a disastrous, although I had to do it several times.

11:37 pm - raison d'etre
mm... I'm not talking about the Chobits ending theme... haha. I'm quite happy with my life now, I think I haven't been this pleased with my life ever since I got back from the US. The final year in the US, although I had some problems, I've was the treasurer for the Anime Club, went to cons and was doing what I love with people I love.

Since I've gotten to Japan, I've been spending more time alone. I was out a lot, yes, but among a bunch of strangers. I could do what I want, but usually not with other people. Few friends came and went, well, I met Shinya around that time, and I still keep contact with him. (In fact I'm going to have lunch with and walk around Akihabara with him tomorrow.) But that was about it. I joined the Society for New Economics and I made friends there, but, I wasn't doing exactly what I wanted. I did gain some fame from my work at the Mita Festival, notablly making the intro movie and webpage.

Anyway, It's TOKINE and MAIKAZE that really brought the change. I really enjoy the time there. But, it really bugs me, I don't want to work as an animator... I mean, the idea of making anime sounds fun, but it's one of the worst paying jobs out there. It's great doing what I like, but it's no good if I'm starving and struggling just to stay alive...

And totally out of the blue, but Asahi Honnama Blue (a beer brand) just ran a TV commercial with the "Surfin' Bird," except the song was like "Asahi Blue Blue Blue, Blu-blu-blue"... lol. It made me stare at the TV for a second.

Mmm... photobucket's seems down now, so I'll show this other stuff later I guess.

07:25 pm - ToHeart2:AD
Completed Silfa's scenario on ToHeart2: Another Days yesterday night. I meant to play Milfa's scenario, but I got curious about Silfa and by the time I knew it I passed the point of no return and was in Silfa's storyline.

Anyway, for those who  don't know... ToHeart series is a visual novel made by Leaf/Aquaplus. It has a comparitively light atmosphere compared to similar games by rivaling companies such as Air, Fate/stay night, and Kimi-ga Nozomu Eien, and such. (All made into anime, btw, including ToHeart.) It has a high school campus-life setting, and has slight elements of fantasy, and/or sci-fi.

One of the unique things in the world of ToHeart is the existence of robot maids... which are called "maid-robo." (I think the original ToHeart popularized the idea of maid robots, which could be now seen in other anime/manga/games.) The original ToHeart involved a prototype maid robot (HMX-12 and 13) in the scenario. In to ToHeart2, which takes place in a later time frame, have been publically released and new prototypes HMX-17a/b/c make appearance. Silfa and Milfa are two of the 3 prototypes. If you know Chobits, just image the persocons in Chobits, the maid-robos are pretty much the same thing, including the fact that mass-produced versions do not have emotions, while the prototypes in ToHeart do have emotions programmed.

I've seen robots made by university labs in Japan, but they are quite far from becoming maid-robos or persocons. And even if robots with emotions do come about, I don't think everyone with treat them ethically as Hiroyuki or Takaaki in ToHeart... Well, I guess that's a topic sci-fi has been taking up for years.

Anyway, bleh, lemme continue the game.

12:56 am - Touhou Anime Project
Mmm.. it seems I haven't written anything since my visit to the city of nice boats and... nice boats... and what was I saying? Well, there were lots of seagulls as well.

Plenty's happened. Matsuda got kicked from PR department... pressure from above. Why do we have to mind politics in a college club? There's even a petit-bureaucracy as well. In order to get funding to renovate the club room, we need to write a proposal on why it's necessary and get approval from above. Ya, well, at MAIKAZE I can get away from all that, thank God. And I enjoy the time at the studio.

And speaking of MAIKAZE, everytime I watch this or that I'm tempted to blab everything I know about the project. But Tokine wishes to keep the details low-profile, so, mm... Well, to anyone who's found this blog, well, I'll give a bit of inside info, here? :P Since no one reads it anyway. If Google or something by miracle finds it, oh well, the English fans can get inside information before the Japanese ones do. Lol.

Some Unreleased Information Regarding Touhou Animation Project by Studio MAIKAZE

First of all, for those of you who don't know Touhou or Touhou Animation Project...

Touhou is a vertical shooter made by Team Shanghai Alice (ZUN). It's quite unique in several ways...
  1. It is a doujin (non-commercial) game and is made almost entirely by 1 person, known as ZUN

  2. It's a shooting game that focuses on dodging enemy bullets more than the shooting part

  3. And these bullets you dodge are often come in beautifully designed patterns

  4. The game takes place in a Japanesque fantasy setting, and the characters are well designed for a shooting game
  5. ZUN has approved of most fan works (as long as it's not a direct copy), which has created a very large following of fans who create other doujin work off Touhou

ZUN, however, has opposed any commercial animation up to this point. He says he might do it sometime, but if there was to be a commercial anime, ZUN wants to direct it himself, as well as write the script so he can express things that can only be shown in animation (by his own hands). He, however, says he's too busy for that now.

Anyway, to get to the main part of this... Studio MAIKAZE is a doujin composition/arrangement studio started by Tokine. I wasn't there in the beginning, so I can't tell what the start was, but MAIKAZE gained some recognition from Touhou arrangement CDs, and decided to do a promotional video. People who say the promotional music video started to think it was going to be a real anime (with a storyline and everything), and hearing that Tokine thought, well, he might as well make a real anime then, since as long as it stays doujin, everything fan work is approved by ZUN.

Anyway, a laundry list of interesting (and boring) facts:

About the Staff
  • Touhou Anime Project is doujin, meaning, it's not made by paid people in commercial animation houses (although there are exceptions)

  • Even though it is doujin, the creation process is very professional. The project goes through most steps of commercial annimation.

  • The entire voice acting will be done by professional voice actors. But, the level of the voice acting depends on the budget and the time schedule. Popular voice actors have very tight schedules, which is filled several months ahead of time.

About the Animation
  • Characters are based on Immaterial and Missing Power (+ Aya)

  • Characters making appearance in the first episode are.... wait, maybe I shouldn't say this. Well, okay, first few scenes are Reimu + Suika. Then Aya + Marisa enter.

  • There will be battle scenes.

  • 3 episodes are planned, 10~15 minutes each (+ ending movie and credits, no opening planned, at least for the first episode)

  • Planned release date of the first episode is August 17, 2008 at Comic Market 74. Third demo with previews of actual scenes will be released at Hakurai-jinja Reitaisai 5 May 25, 2008.6. We have 3 episodes planned, 10~15 minutes each (+ ending movie and credits, no opening planned, at least for the first episode)

I thought I'd write more, but, my initial urge to write has died, and I'm tired now. Tomorrow I go to the studio... as well as get my copy of To Heart 2 Another Days. Lol.

12:09 am - Need to keep track of things...
I should probably restart using a scheduler. I haven't used one since I got into college, but, now I've taken on a lot of posts, so I can't keep track of things going on so easily... Keishin, Maikaze, my own doujin circle, as well as college stuff... with deadlines for college orientation, orientation prep/advertisement, Reitaisai, Comiket, blah. Masuki's probably having a harder time leading Keishin, but, mm, it's quite new for me that I get emails from like 5 different people in a matter of few hours all regarding different issues. It was a bit surprising and shocking to get thanked for a webpage I made in like, 3 minutes. D:  People nowadays really need to learn how to use the computer...

mm... makes me want to do a dual quad-core + 3-way SLI system ;o

but then, looking around, C2D E6750 + GeForce 8600GT is pretty decent still. Just want a sound card, better speakers, and a second monitor maybe? The second monitor I'm pretty sure I'll get sometime in the spring break... Working with Photoshop / After Effects etc requires a bit of desk space.

12:38 am - filled up

After the last Comic Market, the cupboard I stuffed doujinshi in has completely filled up. I guess I need to find a bigger place for the collection.

BTW, the Patchy postcard that was given out at the KFC booth is really pretty. Mine unfortunately got a bit folded on the edge... ;_;

The Great Plan is already beginning to fail. Well, should get started about now? ;P  Oh, and, I'm now a member Touhou Animation Project by MAIKAZE as editor/camera. Although, the "camera" work in modern CG animation is all done inside the computer.

01:51 am - Desk Change

I've been using this cramped computer desk for a while, but, now that I want to start editting movies, it was too crammed. I mean, I got a small sized keyboard, yet the mousepad goes undeer the keyboard because there's just too little space. So, basically, I got a new computer desk. It's similar to what I was using back in the US, flat on top, and pretty much no attachments, no keyboard drawers and such. Just one regular drawer and one small elevated platform, probably to place the printer or something. The old desk, might stay, if I find a place to stuff it in this room... Or maybe it can go to the club room at college... where I plan to add a computer. Mmm... Well, getting late.
